Full Transcript
I'm giving a workshop today in Jerusalem and I have to leave home pretty early but I wanted to wake up a bit earlier to go over the material so I can get there sharp and give a good presentation [Music] when we just started the new school around 2 and 1 half years ago we started by doing workshops about freelancing stuff like productivity pricing and you know how to run your freelance business because we wanted to see if our content really resonates with freelance designers and the workshops were really really good but then we wanted to kind of to scale you know the new school and reach more people so we kind of um recorded an online video and we've launched you know the new school in English and since then since we've do done that like 2 years ago we didn't really give workshops in person anymore but today I'm heading right now to Jerusalem to give a talk to a group of Orthodox women designers who usually don't probably have the access to you know English online learning stuff so we kind of felt like it's really important to bring our content to them so I'm heading there right now and I'm going to give it's going to be a 5 hour [Music] [Music] Workshop all right I've arrived so wish me good luck and while I'm there enjoy the city [Music] here I [Music] am [Music] Jal all right and I am done my voice is completely ruined from speaking 5 hours straight I can't speak anymore heading back to T I want to share with you kind of the highlights when you're managing your time the making the difference between what is urgent and what is important and a lot of times we we you know we are getting confused because we get so much notifications and people are calling us so we have the feeling that some things are are important because they happen right now such as we got a notification an SMS message whatever and we're taking care of that even though it's not really important both to us and to our kind of long-term goals so by understanding and sometimes the really most important things to do such as planning spending time with the people that you love you know uh having fun those are really really important things also you know to keep us creative motivated and stuff like that but they're not urgent you know nobody texts you a message you have to go have fun right now or you should be sleeping but it's super important even though it's not urgent and we should kind of learn how to balance and do more of the important stuff rather than the Urgent stuff so that's kind of maybe the core message of the first talk around time management some people think that if you charge more money that means you're more profitable but that's not necessarily the case because it really depends on how long it Tak you to complete a project and what are your spendings I mean if I'm living in a super expensive country and you know my rent is super high it doesn't matter if I'm CH I mean somebody from a different country can chart you know lower prices and be more profitable so it's not always about the price it's a lot of times about your own business model which means how much money you spend and also how long it takes you to complete because basically this is your cost as a designer when you're trying to think about pricing a project you should generally ask yourself four question and the first one is how you know what is the range of prices in this market which means you have to do a little bit of research and kind of you know industrial Espionage but also understand what's the value of the of the project to your clients and um also by managing the project understand what is the cost to you kind of understand how long this project is going to take you and this answering those two questions kind of helps you define the range of prices that is relevant to this question and then you ask yourself how interested I am in this project and what are the really long-term consequences of doing this project I mean is it going to really dramatically improve my uh chances of getting the next project is it a really great connection to to a new market or some projects have a great impact on your life they can really change things for you but other projects are just like okay it's going to be another project in their portfolio but nothing is really going to change so by answering those two questions what are the long-term consequences and how much I'm interested in this project I kind of can put myself in the range and understand if if it's not going to impact my life that much or if I'm not that interested I'm going to push the price higher but if this project can really change my life then maybe I'm willing to be on the lower um side of you know of the price range so I'm back in the city super tired workshops really take a lot of energy from you and my throat Thor but it was really good fun and it was actually inspiring it was a group of like 35 women designer entrepreneurs Studio owners and you know I came to teach them but I ended up being inspired myself anyway I'm going back home to rest for a little bit but tonight I'm going to a queen concert which I'm super excited about cuz as a teenager I was a queen fan a huge Queen fan so I'm excited to see them even though it's without Freddy it's still going to be an awesome show hope you guys have a great day we'll catch you tomorrow we are the [Music] [Applause] champions and we keep us fighting we are the champion
