Reviews the Canon M6 Mark ii camera for videographers

Full Transcript

in this video I want to review the canon m6 mark 2 which is a mirrorless camera they just came out with very recently and I want to make a slightly different review here now I've seen many other reviews that talk about the specs of this camera I've seen some talking about the photo capabilities of this but I haven't seen many talking about the video capabilities of this camera and I bought this recently I've been using it as my primary camera for all of my channels and I've really been spending a lot of time with this camera and I really do like it it's currently my favorite camera which is why I'm using it all the time and so I want to focus this video on the video capabilities of this camera so why you might or might not want to use this if you have a youtube channel or if you make videos for Instagram or tik-tok or whatever you're doing out there if you're making video content why you might want to be considering this camera or not so I want to break this down in a couple different segments in this video I want to start off with a physical tour show you guys what it looks like what it feels like and just give you a better idea of what we're talking about here then I want to get into the actual filming the pros and cons of filming with this you know some of the specs as well as what I like and don't like after actually using it then I want to get into some of the accessories you might want to consider buying and then lastly I'll give you guys a general conclusion about you know if this is the camera for you or not so of course it depends on what you're looking for every creator is slightly different some people shoot in lower light some people shoot more actions type stuff so whatever you're looking for this might or might not be the camera for you I think it's definitely a really nice camera for me so starting off with the physical tool right here you'll see on the bottom I think will start on the bottom it's pretty standard not that exciting but you do have your battery slot and to your SD slot on the bottom right there now the battery I like that it has the same like a OS rebel kind of battery that I have unlike my SL 2 and like many other of my cameras so it's nice to have a consistent battery across different cameras also your SD card slot is on the bottom I don't think that's the best spot for it but regardless that's where they put it on a lot of these you know mid-range type cameras on the right side you have your USB see right there and you have your HDMI now the USB type-c is pretty exciting because that means you can have power delivery to this so you can plug into the wall have a you know USB C plugged in there and you can power your camera if you're shooting you know a very stationary setup so if you have a tripod and it just is always there then it might make sense to not worry about changing batteries all the time just run power delivery to your camera and you don't have to worry about that at all now on the flip side you just have again your little flap right there with your mic and then above that you have your little switch which pops up your flash now this flash is actually pretty cool a little bit of a photo thing right here I saw somebody else talk about this and it is a cool concept where instead of shooting a flash directly at your subject you can actually bend this back because it's on two hinges right there so you can bend it back and like bounce it off the ceiling or you know any other surroundings around you to get more of an ambient lighting and less of like a really harsh you know direct flash at your subject so just a cool thing if you use a flash indoors that's a cool way to do that now of course you have your little hop mount on the top right there that's a way that you can put on obviously like a shotgun mic or if you want to put on like an electronic viewfinder because this Canon the camera actually doesn't have an EF V built into it but you can get one and put it on there again since we're talking about videos here you don't need one because you're never really going to be using that for videos and then we have your little wheels on this three little wheels in a row right there so one of them is switching between different modes you'll see that you do actually have a video mode so you can shoot videos in any of the other modes or almost any of the other modes but if you go to like manual for example you can only shoot 1080p in that and if you want to shoot 4k you have to go over to video mode so I'm not sure exactly why it's set up that way but it is regardless so if you're shooting 4k you have to be in video mode now video mode on here does have three sub modes so you can shoot an HDR you can shoot in like Auto or you can shoot in manual so I always obviously just use manual that's what I think most creators should be using HDR can be useful though if you're in like a pretty diverse situation and then of course the three little dials of the other will there's a third one on the back as well so you have a little dial right up by the shutter button and you can customize you know a lot of these dials so I have that one working my shutter speed then I have my aperture is the thumb dial right there and then the other one on the back the little wheel that spins I've been using that one for my ISO so having three different dials is really nice because I think really a big important purpose of having a camera especially when you're shooting video is to have it as easy as possible for you to tell your story for you to create whatever you're trying to and you never know where you're gonna be if you're in a city if you're on a subway and something funny is happening you might want to just get your camera out and be able to get a video really really quickly so having these little dials that are custom based on what you typically change first I think is really nice now on top of that the thumb dial on the top you can also press the dial function button in the middle and you can go and change like the white balance or something else that you want the dial to also do so on the back you have a little manual focus auto focus little switch right there now this is not going to be working if you're using an EF lens like I have right here so I have an EF lens an EF M adapter and I'll talk about that later in this video and so for that reason it doesn't actually switch between manual and automatic focus on this camera so then we get back to the touch screen on the back and the touch screen flips up and back like that so pretty standard for a lot of mirrorless cameras you see sony has something like this as well it works really well it looks pretty good you know I don't have a problem seeing it in any bright light or dim settings so it works well for my uses one complaint though is it only flips up and back so if you're trying to shoot like downward and you're behind your camera you're gonna have a really hard time the farthest back it goes is like 45 degrees so you have a really hard time seeing what's below you know it's just a little bit of a tough setup right there so now let's show you some samples of footage from this camera I think it looks really good but comment down below what you guys think of this quick little edit hey guys so this is Herbie right here I just wanted to introduce him he's going to be your camera prop while we test out this camera he's a little camera shy but we'll see how he does [Music] [Music] hey guys if you're vlogging it might look something like this this is the internal mics right now so hopefully the audio would be better if you use a shotgun mic but you'll see the vlog quality is probably decent if focus is really well the autofocus seems to track me really well it does have dual pixel autofocus which most Canon cameras do which is one of the best reasons to buy one and of course I have many there's many different lenses you use this one is a basic 24 millimeter prime lens which seems to be my favorite for any kind of vlog type stuff like this so getting back to the adapter then because I want to use my lenses that I have on like a 70 D and a DD an SL - like a lot of the old Canon cameras I have a lot of lenses I want to put them on this one so you need to get this little EFM adapter now the EFM adapter goes from the EF lens on one side to the M on the other and it makes sense that it's a true adapter and all you're really doing is just changing sizes and the distance right there because you have actually no glass in this there's no glass and this little adapter it's literally just a metal ring and what you're doing is creating the space you require between the sensor and the lens in order to maintain the proper focal length so that's just one difference between the DSLR and the mirrorless camera so you have you know a slightly a larger gap there then you actually need to fill with this little adapter right there so that's pretty much everything I want to show you about this camera physically looking at it now getting into some of the specs and some of the capabilities of this it has a decent battery I saw some people complain but I've actually just shot two 30 minute videos with this and I had no problem on a single battery it's really I don't I don't run out of battery my videos are usually somewhere around 30 minutes to an hour worth of footage so I never run out of battery and if you do you just bring a second battery anyway if you're shooting weddings or something just bring another battery guys they're pretty cheap they're easy to get it's a pretty common battery for Canon so that really is not a problem for me now another thing like I said it's 1080p in any of the camera settings except video mode video mode you can go to 4k and also in video mode it kind of if you go into settings you can enable high frame rate which means you can shoot slow-mo which is 120 P at 1080 which is pretty nice you can shoot you know that that the slo-mo and really slow it down 4 or 5 times when you're in reduction or post prandial so I like the white balance on here I like how you can have that adjusted right from the little thumb thing up top so next let's talk about some accessories you can get for this camera the first one I think everyone should get especially if you have older Canon cameras and older lenses obviously you should get the EFM adapter I think it's you know not that expensive either 50 or $100 usually on sale so you can go out and get that and use all of your older lenses I like it I think it works really well or you can just go out and buy all new lenses if you really want the smaller more compact lenses that you know fit this camera naturally something else I think the USBC power delivery might be a good thing to look into if you want to have this set up on a tripod if you're filming videos like mine it's definitely a good thing to look into another accessory that I think most people maybe don't need but it could be interesting if you're shooting any photos would be the EF V the electronic viewfinder that kind of just fits right on the top right there I don't know if you want that definitely check it out but I don't think it would be serving me any purpose especially because you obviously have a live view on your screen right there and I think it works just as well if not better for my purposes and then lastly you want to make sure you're getting the right SD card that you can shoot 4k I'll link that down below the ones that I use I just use the SanDisk gold card and of course if you don't have that your footage can look choppy and won't look very good I think most people already know this but it's just something that I just wanted to mention in case anybody's buying this and it's their first camera okay so guys that's everything I have to say about this camera I think overall it's a really impressive camera I really like the 4k some little drawbacks though I do wish that the lent or the screen went back a little farther than 45 degrees so sometimes I'm shooting things straight down if you're trying to do like a tutorial or something unboxing right sometimes it's nice to have that enabled you know have the ability to see it when it's straight down so that's one drawback right there another drawback is if you have anything on the top a pretty classic problem with these little fold up screens is they really they're in the way so you're gonna interfere with the microphone and so you can't see the screen if you're doing any kind of vlog type setup so that's a drawback right there I think it's only a matter of time until somebody makes like a cage for this and you can mount like the microphone on the side or something that would probably be a good purchase if you're getting this camera for vlogging other than that there's really not many drawbacks with this camera I think it's really light it works really well has a decent battery life I think the quality of the video is really good for my purposes it doesn't actually shoot 24 frames per second yet so for you guys out there looking to really make cinematic videos they did say that they are releasing a firmware update in early 2020 so they will have 24 P on here if you want that for me I was just shoot 30 anyway and I don't really see a big deal with that from my style of videos if you're shooting a lot of like cinematic stuff obviously a lot of people really like the 24 P though so guys I think that's everything I have to say about the Canon m6 mark - I think it's a really impressive camera if you guys agree or disagree comment down below and let me know why you like or dislike this camera what features you are really excited about or what features you really wish this camera had so as always guys thank you all for watching I'll see you next time
