Mainframe refactor has two parts. A development environment for code conversion and specialized Java library supporting the modernized application as it is running in the target Google cloud environment. Mainframe refactor supports both batch and online workloads. Here we are presenting an example of a batch job that was modernized. We can see an illustration of the application components on the mainframe and in Google cloud. On the left, we see a mainframe hosting a Cobalt application that uses DB2, QAM, and VSAM files. On the main frame, these Cobalt batch jobs were invoked from a JCL and with the scheduler responsible for submitting the JCL jobs for execution. On the right, we see one of the potential target architectures for the modernized application. Since the refactored application is transformed into Java, multiple target architectures and deployment models are supported. This includes using cloudnative solutions to replace mainframe batch processes, including using GKE or using Cloudr Run and submitting jobs through PubSub.
