Preparation strategies for being managed out of a job

Full Transcript

Step five, prepare for an exit. If you're unable to address the underlying problems, then you're headed for one of two realities. Either you're going to be asked to leave the organization, or things are going to keep getting uncomfortable until you ask to leave. But here's the only upside of getting managed out. It buys you time. You're not getting surprised with a firing. You've got time, time to prepare, time to weigh out your options. Use that time wisely. Start by updating your resume now when you're not panicking about it. And create a portfolio of your best work. Think projects and deliverables, things you're really proud of. Start collecting all of that and putting it in a place where you have access to it if you're no longer with the company. Cuz trust me, if they decide to actually fire you, you will not have access to any of it from that moment forward.

Original Description

Being managed out is uncomfortable — but it gives you something a sudden firing never does: time. Use it to update your resume, build a portfolio of your best work, and save everything you'd want access to later. Because the moment you're formally let go, that access disappears.
