How To Use A Sunset Review To Grow Your Business - 5 Steps
If you haven’t heard of a Sunset Review before, it’s a business technique based off the Texas Sunset Advisory Commission launched in 1977. Since its launch 40 years ago it’s saved the state around $980 million dollars! Stay tuned and I’ll show you how to use this same strategy to save your business money and time.
Step #1 - Start with a SWOT Analysis
A SWOT Analysis is an in depth look at the Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats. You’ll want to use this as your very first step of your Sunset Review. You can do this at a business level, or for even more impact, use this tool to analyse to results of your marketing campaigns, events, product lines, or the value of any aspect of your business.

Step #2 - Assume the worst
Start with your worst case scenario. What are the negative implications of cancelling the program or effort immediately? Will you see a loss of leads? Could there be PR backlash? Could another company step into the vacant space and cause a loss of business? By identifying the worst possible outcome, you’re better able to plan for success in the future.
Step #3 - Find the silver lining
Look at the positive outcomes of the plan or strategy that you’re reviewing. Did you learn more about your target demographic? Did you experience an increase in sales? Perhaps the event was more widely attended. Even if the status quo remained unchanged there’s always some sort of positive outcome. Find it, focus on it, and learn how you can use it in the future.
