AI + Apple + Source = ???

Steve Jobs worst nightmare has just come true. The source code for Siri's little brother is being open sourced by Apple! Apple has had a slew of recent acquisitions related to on device AI and machine learning, processing. 14 March, 2024 - Bloomberg - Acquires Darwin.AI https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2024-03-14/apple-aapl-buys-canadian-ai-startup-darwinai-as-part-of-race-to-add-features 8 Feb, 2024 - 9to5 Mac - "Apple bought 30+ AI startups last year..." https://9to5mac.com/2024/02/08/apple-bought-ai-startups/ This is because Apple is way behind the game compared to Google and Android. Where you can go to a country like Thailand, download the Thai language, and be able to take your phone into airplane mode and have all the translations running on your device. I'm sorry, my humble iPhone, but you simply do not cut it anymore. And thankfully, Apple's realized that. They've open sourced their on device large language model called Open Elm, attempting to compete with what Facebook is doing with llama. The Register - "Apple releases OpenELM, a slightly more accurate LLM" "It's not the fastest machine learning model, but you can't have everything" Published Wed 24 April, 2024 https://www.theregister.com/2024/04/24/apple_openelm_ai/ The rumor is that next year, Apple's going to start releasing processing units that are specifically designed to be able to run large language models and artificial intelligence on both the MacBook Pro as well as on iPhones and iPads. It is very interesting. I would have never guessed that Apple would have open sourced anything. This is probably the first thing I honestly remember them open sourcing. So it is a step in the right direction for our friends in Cupertino. #apple #generativeai 🎧 Music by V - "FRI(END)S"
