I want to quickly talk about a small part of Bash scripting that can make a script either easy to read or needlessly painful. I mean the way we write conditions, and more narrowly, the way we use negation with `!`.

I started thinking about this after I came across this check in a script:

if [[ ! -f "$file" || ! -r "$file" || ! -w "$file" ]]; then

echo "Error: File is missing or does not have read/write permissions"
