Action Steps
  1. Identify the unique characteristics of your production environment and emphasize them to your team.
  2. Implement distinct workflows, commands, and screens for production to create a sense of consequence.
  3. Train your team to recognize and respect the differences between production and other environments.
  4. Regularly review and update your production environment to ensure it remains distinct and safe.
  5. Use tools and automation to reinforce the uniqueness of your production environment and reduce the risk of mistakes.

One of the dumbest ideas in operations is that production should feel just like every other environment.

It sounds elegant. Consistent. Clean. Same workflows. Same commands. Same screens. Same habits. The logic is obvious, if every environment looks the same, people can move faster and make fewer mistakes.

That logic breaks the moment pressure shows up.

In real operations, sameness does not create safety. It creates ambiguity. When the environment with real consequence feels ordinary, people will treat it like something ordinary. Not because they are careless. Because the system trained them to.

Production should feel different on purpose.
